Taj Mohotsav (Hindi: ताज महोत्सव, Urdu: تاج مہوتسو, translation: Taj Jubilee) is an annual ten day event organized in the month of spring at Shilpagram, near Taj Mahal at Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.
This cultural bonanza was started in year 1992 and since then its grandeur has reached to greater heights. The year 2010 was the 19th year of this Mahotsav. Every year the festival starts on 18th February. The Taj Mahotsav at Agra gives exposition to art and culture of India. It is a culturally vibrant platform that shows the finest of Indian Crafters and cultural variegation. It is celebrated with great gaiety filled with tribute to the legendary skills of Indian matercraftsmen and exponents of music, art and cuisine.
Celebrations: The festivities commence with a dazzling procession of Mughal splendor. Camels and elephants are taken in with folk artists, drum beaters and craftsmen etc. This creates a visual delight and give reminiscent of the golden era of the Mughal empires.
Every day the special events are exhibited. The handicrafts are exhibited that includes silk of Banares, woodcarvings of Saharanpur, handmade carpets of Badohi, chikan work of Lucknow, blue pottery of Khurja etc. The carnival attracts hundreds of artists and thousands of people. Amazing performances by the folk artists of different states of India makes the event enthralling. Some of the dances are: ‘Sapera’ dance of Rajasthan, ‘Nautanki’ the drama, Lavani of Maharashtra and dances of Dundelkhand.
Food finds an important place in the Mahotsava. One can relish the exotic delicacies and cuisines prepared by the exponents of food cultures of Uttar Pradesh. There are special programmes for school children and competitions. Thousands of people come to the festival and it can get pretty packed and chaotic. Great deals can be found on purchases if you bargain.
