Visit to Mongolia in April 2005. This included visit to UB (Ulaan Bator), Gobi desert as well as rural Mongolia via train & surface (4-wheel drive).
Mongolia is a thinly populated country which borders Russia and China. It is a landlocked country East-Central Asia having its capital as Ulan Bator which is home to about 40% of the total country's population. Mongolia has just 3 million people and very little arable land. The famous Gobi Desert is located in the south of the country. The predominant religion in Mongolia is Tibetan Buddhism although many don't follow or practise very regularly.
Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar) in Mongolian is: Улаанбаатар and is the largest city and capital of Mongolia. With a population of just over 1 million and located in the north central part of the country, the city lies in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the Mongolia. It is connected by roads, by rail to the Trans-Siberian Railway and Chinese railroad network as well as by air with the largest airport. The city was founded in 1639 as a Buddhist monastery center and, in the 20th century, grew into a major manufacturing center defined by its broad boulevards and squares and Socialist Classicist-style buildings.
I landed in UB from Beijing and went by road and rail into inner Mongolia on a visit.
