Dancers getting ready at the Konark Dance & Music Festival held from February, 19th to 23rd, 2010 was organized by Konark Natya Mandap. The objectives of the Konark Natya Mandap are to preserve, promote, and project the rich cultural heritage of Orissa and to infuse cultural awareness in the minds of all. Started with painstaking efforts of Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, an internationally renowned Odissi dance teacher. 2010 was the silver jubilee year of the festival. For more details see http://www.konarknatyamandap.org/ The festival takes place in an open-air auditorium and enlivens the spirit of the sculptures of Konark temple which is just a short distance away. The festival brings in the spirit of merry to all the onlookers. The music reverberates and combined with the sounds of the ankle bells of the dancers enthralls the audiences. The elegant steps and expressions of the dancers makes the event so captivating that no one can ever forget it.
Night view of the Konark Temple. The main Temple was called by European sailers "The Black Pagoda" as it formed an important landmark for them in their coastal voyage. Contrasting to this , the white washed Temple of Lord Jagannath at Puri was known as the white pagoda. Konark Sun Temple in Orissa belongs to the Kalinga school of Indian temples and was constructed by King Narasimhadeva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty in the 13th Century. This world heritage site temple takes the form of a colossal chariot of Surya (Sun) drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquitely decorated wheels. Surya has been a popular deity in India since the Vedic perios. Thousands of sculptured images depict deities, celestial and human musicians, dancers, lovers, and myriad scenes of courtly life, ranging from hunts and military battles to the pleasures of courtly relaxation. The temple is famous for its erotic stone sculptures, which can be found primarily on the second level of the porch structure.
