Fatehpur Sikri, India Feb 2010 : Fatehpur Sikri (Hindi: फतेहपुर सीकरी, Urdu: فتحپور سیکری) located in Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, India is about 40 km from Taj Mahal, Agra City. This historical city was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar from 1570 and served as the empire's capital until 1585 when it was abandoned due to lack of water supply to sustain the growing population. The palace and mosque are a major tourist attraction and it is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Akbar inherited the Mughal Empire from his father Humayun and during the 1560s he rebuilt the Agra Fort and established it as his capital. He had a son and then twins, but the twins died due to which he consulted Salim Chishti - the sufi saint who lived as a recluse in the small town Sikri near Agra. Salim predicted that Akbar would have another son, and indeed one was born in 1569 in Sikri. He was named Salim to honor the saint and would later rule the empire as Emperor Jahangir. The following year, Akbar, then 28 years old, determined to build a palace and royal city in Sikri, to honor Salim Chishti. The name, Fateh is Arabic in origin and means "victory", also in Urdu and Persian language. It is at Fatehpur Sikri that the legends of Akbar and his famed courtiers, the nine jewels or Navaratnas, were born. The buildings of Fatehpur Sikri show a synthesis of various regional schools of architectural craftsmanship such as Gujarat and Bengal because indigenous craftsmen from various regions were used for the construction of the buildings. Same reason why influences from Hindu and Jain architecture are seen hand in hand with Islamic elements.

Agra Fort, UP, India, Feb 2010 : The Agra Fort (Hindi: आगरा क़िला, Urdu: آگرہ قلعہ) located in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh (UP) state of India is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort is also popularly known as the Lal Qila (Red Fort) of Agra (there is one in Delhi as well). Agra Fort is about 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal. Although a fort it can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city and it holds a very important part in the history of pre-independence India. Mugals, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb lived here and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travelers and the highest dignitaries who participated in the making of history in India.

Konark, Orissa, India, Feb 2010 : Attended the Silver Jubilee of the annual Konark Dance and Music Festival which was held at Konark (Sanskrit: कोनार्क), Orissa, from February 19th to 23rd 2010. Visited the Konark Sun Temple, the beaches of Konark and also went briefly to Puri and Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. The Sun Temple of Konark is dedicated to Surya (Sun God) and is a masterpiece of Orissa's medieval architecture. It is an UNESCO world heritage site and is widely known not only for its architectural grandeur but also for the intricacy and profusion of sculptural work. The entire temple has been conceived as a chariot of the sun god with 24 wheels, each about 10 feet in diameter, with a set of spokes and elaborate carvings. Seven horses drag the temple. Two lions guard the entrance, crushing elephants. A flight of steps lead to the main entrance. The Nata Mandir in front of the Jagamohana is also intricately carved. Around the base of the temple, and up the walls and roof, are erotic carvings. There are images of animals, foliage, men, warriors on horses and other patterns and motifs. There are three images of the Sun God, positioned to catch the rays of the sun at dawn, noon and sunset. Clean and well kept, its worth a visit. Suraj Kund Crafts Mela, Haryana (Delhi), India, Feb 2010 : Every year for two weeks, Surajkund comes alive with bright colours of Indian folk traditions and cultural heritage during the Surajkund Crafts Mela. This year was no different other than the record number of visitors - 1,25,000 in the first week itself which included thousands of foreign tourists to the mega event! The idea behind the Mela is to recreate a pristine rural ambience for foreign & domestic tourists, to educate the patrons of arts and crafts on the skills involved in art creation, to introduce crafts and craftspersons directly to the buyers and to identify, nurture and preserve the languishing crafts of the country. This year Rajasthan was the theme state and also had participations from Tajikistan, Thailand and Egypt. The 24th Surajkund Crafts Mela 2010 began on 1st Feb 2010 with an inauguration by Mohd. Hamid Ansari, Hon’ble Vice President of India in the presence of Governor of Haryana, Shri Jagannath Pahadia, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Union Minister for Tourism, Housing & Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Ashok Gehlot. Surajkund which is located near Faridabad in Haryana is just about 8 km and an hour's drive from New Delhi. For two weeks, Surajkund comes alive with the rhythm and beats of folk dances, amazing shopping deal, a riot of colors and a variety of food from all over. One can get great deals on clothes, shoes, furniture, woodwork, jewellery, metal craft, drapes, pottery, utensils, paper products and much more. Many of these items are hand made by villagers and used in their daily lives. Some of the best craftpersons & national award winners attend the event. Over the years, more than 200 National and State awardees from various different states of India have exhibited their work in the Mela. All day, at the Chaupal & later at Natyashala, various dance troupes performed to enthralled audiences. The Kalbelia and Khartal dance of Rajasthan, Ghumar dance of Haryana, Chhaw dance of West Bengal as well as dance performances from Tajikistan (Taji) and Thailand were held in the open air theatre. Some of the best Rajasthani cuisine was served at Choki Dhani. The Surajkund Mela is organized by Haryana Tourism. Visitors payed Rs. 50 as an entrance ticket for the day. Villages on border of Maharashtra & MP, India. Oct 2009 : Visited SIRDI (Satpura Integrated Rural Development Institution) which is non-profit, non-government organization working in the villages and tribal areas of Maharashtra & Madhya Pradesh to strengthen rural society, SIRDI mainly works with women & the rural poor. Located not too far from Nagpur, Maharashtra, in central India. I visited them first in February 2007 and again October 2009. These images are from the 2009 visit. Many of the villages are BPL (Below Poverty Line) and the villagers in these rural areas live in abject poverty and with dismayal health care facilities. Mumbai Sea Link, India Jul 2009 : The Bandra–Worli Sea Link (BWSL), officially called Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts on either side that links Bandra in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai. It has become an iconic symbol of Mumbai city. The bridge is a part of the proposed Western Freeway that will link the Western Suburbs to Nariman Point in Mumbai's main business district. The bridge was commissioned by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and built by the Hindustan Construction Company. The first four of the eight lanes of the bridge were opened to the public on 30 June 2009.All eight lanes were opened on 24 March 2010. BWSL reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli during peak hours from 60–90 minutes to 20–30 minutes.

What's interesting is that while Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, on the island of Bali, 93% of the population is Balinese Hindu and one can find Hinduism in each and every aspect of the life and living. Balinese performing arts often portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana but with heavy Balinese influence. Famous Balinese dances include pendet, legong, baris, topeng, barong, gong keybar, and kecak (the monkey dance). Bali boasts one of the most diverse and innovative performing arts cultures in the world, with paid performances at thousands of temple festivals, private ceremonies, or public shows. Bali has many different aspects. Ubud and the Central & North Bali has many art & traditional areas. Culture, tradition and slow paced. Sanur is towards the South-East and a beach location. The name "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means island of the betel nut tree (Areca catechu), family Palmae. All these names can refer either to the island of Penang, the state of Penang or sometimes the state capital, George Town. Pushkar, Rajasthan, Mar 2009 : Went for a shoot for TVE Asia Pacific (http://www.tveap.org/ ) and those images are posted at: http://photos.suchit.in/Commercial/For-TVEAP-Telephones-in/7586531_qNgxq/ Pushkar (Hindi: पुष्कर), Rajasthan is famous for its Brahma Temple as well as the annual Pushkar Mela. Pushkar situated 11 kms. to the North-West of Ajmer is a sacred town for the Hindus. The charm of this sleepy, lakeside settlement so captivated the great Indian poet, Kalidas,that it found a place in his classic, Abhigyan Sakuntalam. The Great Hindu epics of Mahabharat and Ramayana make references to this religious place regarded to be Adi Tiratha. Evidence points to its having existed during the fourth century B.C. lake in the inhospitable surroundings of a desert is no less than a miracle. Pushkar comes alive during the mela, but is visited during other times as well. Many Ghats run down to the Holy Lake where pilgrims are constantly bathing in the holy waters. SurajKund Mela, Haryana (Delhi), India, Feb 2009 : The Surajkund Crafts Mela 2009 began on 1st Feb 2009. The 23rd annual event was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil. Surajkund which is located in Haryana is just an hour's drive from New Delhi. Surajkund comes alive for two weeks with the rhythm and beats of folk dances, lots of shopping opportunity and a riot of colors each year in early Feb. This year the Surajkund Mela was open from February 1-15 and the theme state was Madhya Pradesh. The Surajkund Mela is organized by Haryana Tourism and is held near Faridabad (outskirts of New Delhi). The handicrafts displayed and sold include products of leather, brass & bell metal, cane & bamboo, ceramic, clay dolls, jute, masks & puppets, sandalwood carving, artistic weaving, prints & paintings, needlwork and embroidery etc. This year there was quite a bit of security. Visitors who payed Rs. 50 as an entrance ticket enjoyed savouring cuisine of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal, and Gujarat apart from Egypt, Chinese, and Thai cuisine. Elephanta Caves, Mumbai, Feb 2008 : The Elephanta Caves are located just off Mumbai harbour in the Gharapuri Island. The name Elephanta Island was given by the Portuguese when they ruled over this area. In 1987, the caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hewn out of solid rock, the Elephanta Caves date back to 600 AD. The caves attract many visitors who take an hour long ferry boat ride to reach from Gateway of India. The cave complex is a collection of shrines, courtyards, inner cells, grand halls and porticos arranged in the splendid symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture, and filled with exquisite stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. At the entrance to the caves is the famous Trimurti, the celebrated trinity of Elephanta : there's Lord Brahma the Creator, Lord Vishnu, the preserver and Lord Shiva the Destroyer Unfortunately, many of the sculptures inside have been damaged by iconoclastic Portuguese rulers who took potshots at Hindu Gods with their rifles. And yet somehow, nothing has disturbed the sublime beauty of this place for centuries. The rock-cut temple complex cover an area of 60,000 sq ft consisting of a main chamber, 2 lateral ones, courtyards and subsidiary shrines. The temple complex is said to be the abode of Shiva and its truly a magnificent site to see the beautiful reliefs, sculptures, and temple. Also visited the Afghan Church. Work on the church of St. John the Evangelist was begun in 1847 by the British to commemorate the dead of the disastrous First Afghan War of 1838. It was consecrated in 1858 and work on the steeple was concluded in 1865. The church is located in Navy Nagar in the Colaba area of Mumbai (Bombay).

Singapore Jurong Bird Park, Jan 2008 : Got my Nikon D300 camera and took a few pictures of the famous Singapore Jurong Bird Park, Jan 2008. Across 20 hectare its collection has more than 9,000 birds from 600 species. The Park has four aviaries, among which is the world’s largest walk-in aviary with the tallest man-made waterfall for visitors to enjoy a close-up view of free-flying birds from Africa and South America. Coorg & Mysore, Karnataka, India, Jan 2008 : Decided to visit the Club Mahindra Resorts property in Coorg (Kodagu) http://www.clubmahindra.com/res_coorg_destination.asp So we flew to Bangalore (Bengaluru) [Kannada: ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ] and drove to Mysore and Coorg. Coorg is known for its scenic beauty, lush green valleys, coffee plantations, teak wood forests & mountain ranges. Situated on the Western Ghats of Karnataka in South India, it was nice to beat the city heat and enjoy the lower temperatures. Along the way are many religious places of both Hindu and Buddhist faith. A good family getaway which can help relax your body and mind. Just 7 kilometers from Madikeri town which is a few kilometers from the Club Mahindra property in Coorg is the Abbi (Abby) Falls. The narrow road to Abbi Falls is a combination of steep ups and downs, twists and turns, wriggling through the green and dense foliage of surrounding coffee plantations. Situated on private property, a narrow pathway leads you downward to where the waterfall can be seen. As various streams congregate in the mountains above, they swell with the monsoon rains and force their way down the mountain slope. Splashing hard against the huge boulders of rock, unmindful of the crevices and hollows, the water drops at enormous speed accompanied by gushing sounds. This white wall of water creates a misty cloud with its moisture-like spray and descends into a flowing stream to perhaps join with the River Cauvery somewhere in the vicinity.

New Delhi, India, Nov 2007 : Delhi (Hindi: दिल्ली, Punjabi: ਦਿੱਲੀ, Urdu: دلی, IPA: [d̪ɪlːiː]) sometimes referred to as Dilli, is the second-largest metropolis in India after Mumbai. With a population of 11.5 million, and with an extended metropolitan population of almost 22 million it is located in northern India on the banks of the River Yamuna. Delhi has the political status of a federally-administered union territory known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), which in itself is part of National Capital Region. Delhi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Having been the capital of several empires in ancient India, Delhi was a major city in the old trade routes from northwest India to the Gangetic Plains. Many ancient monuments, archaeological sites and remains of national importance have been erected in its history. The Mughals built a section of the city (now known as Old City or Old Delhi) that served as the capital of Mughal Empire for a long period. Humayun's tomb is a complex of buildings of Mughal architecture located in Nizamuddin east, New Delhi on the Mathura Road near the crossing of Lodhi Road. In time of Slave Dynasty this land was under the KiloKheri Fort which was capital of Sultan Kequbad son of Nasiruddin(1268-1287). It encompasses the main tomb of the Emperor Humayun as well as numerous others. The complex is an UNESCO's designated World Heritage Site and the first example of this type of Mughal architecture in India. This style of mausoleum was the same that created the Taj Mahal in Agra. The tomb of Humayun was built by the orders of Hamida Banu Begum, Humayun's widow on who's instructions work started in 1562 & completed in 1570. The architect of the edifice was reportedly Sayyed Muhammad ibn Mirak Ghiyathuddin and his father Mirak Ghiyathuddin who were brought in from Herat. It took 8 years to build and had a Chahr Bagh Garden style in its design, the first of its kind in the region. Restoration work by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture was completed in March 2003, enabling water to flow through the watercourses in the gardens once more. Funding for this work was a gift from the institutions of His Highness the Aga Khan to India. In addition, AKTC is conducting a more significant restoration at Babur's tomb, the resting place of Humayun's father in Kabul. High rubble-built walls enclose a square garden divided initially into four large squares separated by causeways and channels, each square divided again into smaller squares by pathways ('Chaharbagh') as in a typical Mughal garden. The lofty mausoleum is located in the centre of the enclosure and rises from a podium faced with series of cells with arched openings. The central octagonal chamber containing the cenotaph is encompassed by octagonal chambers at the diagonals and arched lobbies on the sides, their openings closed with perforated screens. Three emphatic arches dominate each side, the central one being the highest. The structure is built with red sandstone, but white and black marble has been used to relieve the monotony, the latter largely in the borders. A Homage To The Royal Dynasty Several rulers of the Mughal dynasty lie buried in the mausoleum, although it is not possible to identify their graves. Among those lying buried here are Bega Begam, Hamida Banu Begam - Humayun's junior wife, Dara Shikoh - Shah Jahan's son, and the later Mughals, Jalandar Shah, Farrukhsiyar, Rafi'u'd-Darajat, Rafi'u'd-Daula and Alamgir II, Bahadur Shah II.

Dhaka, Bangladesh, Sep 2007 : Bangladesh is the Eastern neighbour of India. Thanks to my dear friend and great photographer Shahidul Alam, UNESCO, Paris invited me to visit DRIK in Dhaka, Bangladesh for an evaluation of the institution and its various arms/functions. In this visit, UNESCO/DRIK under "Artists in Development" programme asked me to hold an exhibition of my pictures at the DRIK Gallery which was an honour. Photos from the show are posted here: http://photos.suchit.in/gallery/4075433_cp3ii/ During the spare time, I got a chance to see the city of Dhaka (Bangla: ঢাকা, pronounced [ɖʱaka]) which is the capital and the largest city of Bangladesh (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ [ˈbaŋlad̪eʃ] Bangladesh). Today's Dhaka has a long story of evolution from the time it was founded during the 10th century. It served as the Mughal capital of Bengal from 1608 to 1704. Before coming under British rule in 1765 it was a trading center for British, French, and Dutch colonialism. In 1905 it was again named the capital of Bengal, and in 1956 it became the capital of East Pakistan. During the Bangladesh war of independence in 1971 the city suffered a heavy damage. In 1982 the spelling was changed from 'Dacca' to 'Dhaka'. Dhaka is located in the geographic center of the country. It is in the great deltaic region of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers and located on the banks of the Buriganga River. With a population of over 12 million, Dhaka is a major city in the region. It is known as the City of Mosques and renowned for producing the world's finest muslin. Having been the center of Persio-Arabic and Western cultural influences in eastern Indian Subcontinent., today it serves as one of the prime centers for culture, education and business in the region. Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country in the world and is among the most densely populated countries in the world with a high poverty rate. However, per-capita (inflation-adjusted) GDP has more than doubled since 1975, and the poverty rate has fallen by 20% since the early 1990s. The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies. Dhaka and other urban centers have been the driving force behind this growth. Unfortunately Buriganga river, which flows by Dhaka, is now one of the most polluted rivers in Bangladesh because of rampant dumping of industrial and human waste. A World Bank study said four major rivers near Dhaka -- the Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Turag and Balu -- receive 1.5 million cubic metres of waste water every day from 7,000 industrial units in surrounding areas and another 0.5 million cubic metres from other sources. Chemicals such as cadmium and chromium, and other elements such as mercury carried by the industrial waste are also creeping into the ground water, posing a serious threat to public health.

Ooty & Coonoor, TN, India, Jul 2007 : Pictures from our trip to Ooty and Coonoor in July, 2007. While we went to Ooty by bus, we returned from Ooty (Udagamandalam) to Mettupalayam near Coimbatore via the Niligiri Passenger Train (NMR). It was sheer joy to travel on the meter gauge steam locomotives which is one of the oldest mountain railways in India (since 1899). Nilgiri (Tamil : நீலகிரி means Blue Mountains when translated into English) range of mountains spread across the states of Tamil Nadu as well as Karnataka and Kerala. They are part of a larger mountain chain known as the Western Ghats. In July 2005, UNESCO added the NMR as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Also went to the Singapore Zoo and got to see the celebrations of Vesak Festival (Buddhist) happening around that time. At 710.2 km2 (274.2 sq mi), Singapore, a microstate and the smallest nation in Southeast Asia, is by orders of magnitude larger than Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and Vatican City, the only other surviving sovereign city-states. The population of Singapore is approximately 4.86 million. Since independence, Singapore's standard of living has risen dramatically. Jaipur (जयपुर), Rajasthan, Mar 2007 : Visited Jaipur (Hindi: जयपुर), Rajasthan in for the "Rajasthan Diwas 2007" which was celebrated from 21st March to 30th March 2007. You can see the pictures here: http://photos.suchit.in/gallery/3367702_JsSAW/ Built by the warrior-astronomer Raja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727, it is full of formidable forts, enchanting palaces and lovely temples. Jaipur is listed in most tourist books as one of the three cities that make India's Golden Triangle - the other two are Delhi and Agra. The old city of Jaipur is enclosed within seven gates, the most important of which are Chandpol, Jaipuri and Sanganeri. Best time to visit is Oct to March as summers can be as hot as 45 C! Here are some of the images from Jaipur City - Pink City as it is fondly called.

Saint Peter's Square (Saint Peter's Piazza or as they say in Italian "Piazza San Pietro"), is located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the papal enclave within Rome. The architect Carlo Fontana, designed the left-handiountain in Piazza San Pietro, built in 1677 as a pendant to the one on the right designed by Carlo Maderno about fifty years earlier. A curious fact concerning the obelisk is that it was used, or was believed to have been used in the Middle Ages, as a reliquary for the ashes of Caesar, and then (up to now) for a fragment of the Holy Cross.

Munnar, India, Feb 2006 : Anu & I made a short trip from Mumbai to Coimbatore to goto Munnar. It is 130 km east of Kochi and borders the state of Tamil Nadu. Munnar is about 6 hours road journey from Coimbatore, TN and is famous as a hill resort and for its tea gardens and lush green tea estates. We had barely reached and settled down when on the second day I had a minor fall but and injury causing a chip & a hairline fracture to my left ankle area. Munnar (Malayalam: മൂന്നാര്‍ , Tamil: மூணார்) is a town located in Idukki District of Kerala the southern state India Located in the southern Western Ghats. The area is surrounded by vast jungles and remains wet and cool during most of the year. Munnar was the summer resort of the British Government in South India and is 1600 m (5400 ft) above sea level. There are three rivers - Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru which flow through this town, but join some distance away from Munnar. The word Munnar in Malayalam and Tamil means three rivers.

It is located about 250 Km from Delhi and is well connected by air, road and rail. Jaipur is often the starting point for tourists visiting Rajasthan. Founded by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727, Jaipur is famous for Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, City Palace & Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh. It is also known for the textile block prints, semi precious jewelry, handicraft items and Raj Mandhir (Movie theater). The state of Rajasthan is located in the North Western part of India. Sand dunes, wooded hills, and amazing lakes & palaces come together with men & women in colourful turbans & skirts making it an enchanting location to visit. It is a kaleidoscope of brightly turbaned men with proud moustaches and women with twinkling anklets in colorful swirling ghagras. Extremely popular with the tourists, Rajasthan is worth a visit for anyone coming to India. The mood & rhythm changes from one region to the other but what hits you most is the warm and friendly smiles across the region. Other images can be found at http://photos.suchit.in/Travel/ AJMER: The town of Ajmer is a sacred place for the Muslims as the famous mosque of Garib Nawaj Khwaja Mauinuddin Chisti is located in it. Its also very close to the city of Pushkar. Urs Ajmer Sharif is held in the holy town of Ajmer in honour of the Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Special prayers are offered at the mosque, and huge amounts of consecrated food offered from the large, steaming cauldrons that were a gift from Akbar. While quwwallis are sung at night, the celebrations unite people of all faiths, and the complete town is decorated with buntings, and wears the spirit of festivity. PUSHKAR: Pushkar is a well-known and important Hindu pilgrim centre. It is just 10 km from Ajmer, Rajasthan. The Pushkar lake and the Brahma temple are the most important sites here. Pushkar is better known and popular for the annual mammoth cattle fair which is an amazing site. The Pushkar lake is surrounded by hills on three sides and desert on the other side. The cave of Saint Agasthya was located on the snake mountain here. There is one belief that Kalidasa, the Indian counterpart of Shakespeare, had this place as his locale for his Sanskrit drama, Shakuntalam. According to a legend, the lake was formed when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus and wanted to perform a yagna. It has world's only temple of Lord Bramha (God of Creation). Both Ajmer and Pushkar are located in the state of Rajasthan which is situated in the Western part of India. Mongolia, Apr 2005 : Visit to Mongolia in April 2005. This included visit to UB (Ulaan Bator), Gobi desert as well as rural Mongolia via train & surface (4-wheel drive). Mongolia is a thinly populated country which borders Russia and China. It is a landlocked country East-Central Asia having its capital as Ulan Bator which is home to about 40% of the total country's population. Mongolia has just 3 million people and very little arable land. The famous Gobi Desert is located in the south of the country. The predominant religion in Mongolia is Tibetan Buddhism although many don't follow or practise very regularly. Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar) in Mongolian is: Улаанбаатар and is the largest city and capital of Mongolia. With a population of just over 1 million and located in the north central part of the country, the city lies in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the Mongolia. It is connected by roads, by rail to the Trans-Siberian Railway and Chinese railroad network as well as by air with the largest airport. The city was founded in 1639 as a Buddhist monastery center and, in the 20th century, grew into a major manufacturing center defined by its broad boulevards and squares and Socialist Classicist-style buildings. I landed in UB from Beijing and went by road and rail into inner Mongolia on a visit. Thanks Batpurev and Dr. Amarsaikhan Dash for all my pictures taken during the trip. Steeped in tradition and culture the only way to truly appreciate it is by visiting it. "The land of the Thunder Dragon" - Druk Yul, as its called in Tibetian is indeed, the Last Shangrila protected by the mighty Himalayas from the rest of the world. Bhutan is only country where the Monarch rule is still in existence and the Kingdom is blissfully untouched. Hidden in the Eastern Himalayas between India and Tibet and as big as Switzerland, but sparsely populated, Bhutan is as pristine as it gets. New York & New Jersey, USA, Aug 2004 : My visit to NY & NJ in August, 2004 was via CDG (Charles De Gaulle) International Airport, Paris, France. Spent time with Satish Mausaji, Kiran Mausi, cousins Akash & Anu as well as my friends, Neel & Kinnari Pujara and Anil & Nisha Dalia. Met up with an old friend Jagdish Parekh who worked in the Empire State Building. The trip to the top of Empire State Building was very memorable.

Sri Lanka & Malaysia, Jul 2004 : Visit to Sri Lanka & Malaysia in July 2004. Due to the truce between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government it was safe to visit the N.E. of SL so we decided to go there for a short holiday. Trincomalee and surrounding area almost after two decade are now accessible. Trinco as it is commonly called, has been a sea port since the days of the ancient Kings and one of the British Empire's most important ports in Asia during the second world war. From 1941-45, Trinco had been the headquarters of Lord Louis Mountbatten Allied Southeast Asia commander. Enroute we stopped at Dambulla. Dating back to the 1st Century BC, this is the most impressive cave temple in Sri Lanka. It has five caves under a vast overhanging rock, carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry. In 1938 the architecture was embellished with arched colonnades and gabled entrances. Inside the caves, the ceilings are painted with intricate patterns of religious images following the contours of the rock. There are images of the Lord Buddha and bodhisattvas, as well as various gods and goddesses. Below a large Golden Buddha statue can be seen. More images from my second trip posted here: http://photos.suchit.in/gallery/2992918/ After SL we went to Malaysia. In Malaysia we visited KL (Kuala Lumpur), PD (Port Dickson) & Genting Highlands. The 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, in KL was very impressive and the view from the sky bridge was fabulous. At Genting we did the roller coaster ride and relaxed in PD. Singapore, May 2004 : Images of Singapore from my newly purchased Nikon D70 DSLR camera. My first visit was to Singapore Zoo with my friend Varun Arora who helped me get the D70. It was the first day out with the camera and I was still getting the hang of it! Mostly used the 18-70 mm lens and the 70-300 mm. Then went to CBD an Esplanade before returning to Mumbai with the new baby. May, 2004
